L-Glutamine is one of my personal favourites when it comes to naturally-occurring, free form amino acids. Glutamine is not only the most abundant amino acid found within skeletal muscle and blood but it is one of the only amino acids with the unique ability to convert to glycogen when required to spare the body from breaking down precious muscle tissue.
With this knowledge, it’s no shock that a reduction in plasma L-Glutamine levels leads to a decreased immune system, reduced muscle recovery and poor overall performance in the gym or on the sporting field.
Glutamine is almost always depleted in people that train regularly or work in a high stress environment, which is almost everyone these days due to our fast paced lifestyles and longer work hours. The optimal times to consume Glutamine are immediately post training with your shake and another 5-10 grams before bed. These dosages will increase your amino profile whilst enhancing your recovery and giving a much needed boost to your immune system.
